Common content problems…
…and how to fix them
There’s not enough buy-in for content in your organisation
This is a content strategy problem. You’ll need the support of the senior people in your organisation to back your approach. To win hearts and minds you need to put in the hours – it usually takes 6 months or more to start seeing a shift in attitudes and improvement.
Listening sessions and good comms are all important as you work with people – often on an individual basis – to get them to understand the power and value of content.

The content produced in your organisation is of varying quality
This happens when there isn’t a content team and colleagues across the organisation are producing content, without necessarily sticking to guidelines. It usually becomes more noticeable when you introduce a professional content team into the organisation. The traditional ways of producing content are no longer fit for purpose and feathers get ruffled. It’s partly a content strategy issue and partly comms, with a bit of training thrown in to get everyone to the same level.
Your persuasion skills will be needed here as you take the time needed to show colleagues that changing how they do things is a good thing.

Your content team might not have all the skills they need, while confidence and motivation is up and down
This happens for lots of reasons: reorganisations, layoffs, funding issues to name just a few. Training and coaching can be a really effective way to re-energise individuals and teams.
Training helps upskill those without knowledge and experience, boosts confidence and makes sure teams are working at the same level. And the one-to-one aspect of coaching is motivating on a personal level, while also helping the team as a whole to become more aligned.

Not enough people can do content design in your organisation
You have a couple of options here:
if you need people quickly then you can bring in some contractors
if you have more time and are looking to build your team then you can hire
There are lots of benefits to bringing in contractors: you get people with lots of experience and they can get going quickly. This helps show the benefit and impact that quality content can have in an organisation. Hiring takes longer but you can design the team size and shape to be able to grow with the needs of the organisation.

We’ve been wrangling content since the days when Yahoo was cool. There’s not much we haven’t seen by now - patchy content processes, cluttered websites and resistance to change – particularly when it comes to digital transformation.
